Pressed Pennies in die Niederlande

Beitragvon Lepeis » 12.01.2014, 20:35

Pennypress history worldwide:
The pressed penny is originally from America. The earliest known is from 1893.
Up to 1965 the pressed pennies were only made on world fairs.
From 1965 to 1985 there were some firms who produced pressed pennies on order as souvenirs.
After 1985 the introduction of stand-alone machines started. Machines fully operated by the consumers themselves. There were companies that placed the machines as being a small attraction. After payment by the visitor by means of throw-in of coins, visitors could themselves press a souvenir coin. The companies remained owner of the machines, the income was divided between the company and the owner of the attraction. The used image and or text on the souvenir coin had a direct relationship with the point where the machine was placed. It started with theme parks and tourist attractions, followed by every place with many visitors. Now there are thousands of Pressed Penny machines in America and penny press machines spread out all over the world.
Pennypress in The Netherlands:
From 1987 up to 1990 the company ARP (Mr C.Arp) from Germany had two pennypress machines at the Pier in Scheveningen. Both mechanical driven machines had one image only. One with Pier and one with Kurhuis.
These machines had a hole in the contra roll to pull the coin to be pressed, through the press roller. This resulted in a rim/hump on the backside of the pressed penny where most manufactures have this rim on the front side as part of the circle of pearls. The coins to be pressed were the 25 cent (cupronickel). That's why these pressed pennies have a Silber color.
End of 1996 A&G Services (Mr.Wetering) starts importing penny press machines from USA to the Netherlands. In January 1997 The New Motropolis Science Centre in Amsterdams opens. Here the first A&G Services pennypress is operational. The second machine is placed at Madam Tussauds "Scenerama" Amsterdam following, during 1997, by The Euromast Rotterdam, Duinezathe Apelscha, Miniatuurland Appelscha, De Waarbeek Hengelo,Planetron Dwingelo, SeaLife Scheveningen and Zaanse Schans museum at Zaandijk. These machines had up to four images.
In the end of 1999, after A&G Services stopped, the Pressed Penny machines were taken over by the company “European Souvenirs”. European Souvenirs (Mr J.Bloeming) from Emmen started in 1999 with above mentioned ten locations. They imported more pressed penny machines from America. European Souvenirs managed to increase the number of locations to a total of 21 for instance The Archeon, Madurodam, Duinrell , Dolfinarium, Dierenpark Emmen, Sixflags/Walibi and the Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem. The quality of the machines was inadequate. The press roller as well as the coin slot blocked regularly and also the press roller adjustment was such that often a misaligned image occurs. In 2006 European Souvenirs stopped.
In 2004 Corforma (Cor Sponselee) from Hulst began with the placement of the Penny Press machines.
A machine which was developed for good quality and was built in-house. There was engraved a maximum of three images to the press roller. The fourth quadrant of the press roller served as overflow so could no longer block. An ingenious system took care of the right timing and also in the coin support towards the press roller an overflow was made, so too many inserted coins could no longer block the press.
At the end of 2013 Corforma had a Penny Press machine operational at 80 sites. For instance at the Efteling, Madurodam, Zaanse Schans, Arena, Batavia Werf, Speelstad Oranje, the Centre of Amsterdam and all the Wadden Islands.
In 2005, Euroscope (Automaten Winkels GmbH & Co. KG) from Wuppertal, Germany bought his first Pennypress machines in the USA. One of these early machines was placed on the Pier at Scheveningen.
Start-up communication problems with the supplier resulted in a pennypress machine having four engraved Scheveningen designs on the press roller: ALL THE SAME !
These USA machines frequently malfunctioned due to bad quality components.
For this reason Euroscope decided to develop their own pennypress machine, starting with the mechanical press and roll system in a square type housing.
The machine at Scheveningen was replaced in 2008 with a new developed, now a day well known Euroscope machine with the typical shaped stainless steel housing with rounded front.
Although the design of the penny in the new Euroscope machine placed at Scheveningen had changed, the housing had a picture of the old design penny (corrected after a couple of years: see Scheveningen De Pier A1)
In the following years, Euroscope placed also Pennypress Machines at Kasteel Ruine Valkenburg(2 design until 2013), Euromast Rotterdam(1), Kasteelpark Born(1) and Bourtange(1). Nebemat maintained all five Euroscope machines in The Netherlands. Nebemat is part of Euroscope BeNeLux now a days.

In 2006, the company Lucoba (Bas in 't Veld) from Leusden became active, started with a rental Penny Press from Corforma for festivities and came up with an own constructed Penny Press machine.
Quickly after the start Lucoba took over, at the end of 2006, the clients from European Souvenirs and placed new machines in those locations that were still generating profit.
In the years that followed this would be extended to about 30 sites in Netherlands.
There are currently Lucoba machines at for instance the Ouwehands dierenpark, Dierenpark Emmen, Dolfinarium, Het Spoorwegmuseum and Corpus.
Lucoba stops in September 2013 and is taken over by Euroscope Germany. In the Netherlands Euroscope is represented by Nebemat (Ruud Thijs). Euroscope had at that time seven machines in Netherlands for instance Bourtange and Euromast Rotterdam.
Spring 2014, Corforma merged into Euroscope.
All activities of Nebemat, Lucoba and Corforma are now part of EUROSCOPE BeNeLux BV.
The Head office of Euroscope BeNeLux BV is located in Hulst, The Netherlands , with Cor Sponselee as executive. Main products: PennyPress, binoculars, Coin machines, Dogtag machines and Photo card Machines.
In the upcoming year Pennypress machines will be rationalized, most likely resulting in new designs of pennies for several locations in The Netherlands and Belgium. Promotion of Pennypress in Luxemburg will be started.

In addition to these Dutch companies there are some foreign companies active in Netherlands.
Often this is controlled by a foreign owner of an attraction.
For example, there is currently a Penny Press machine of the American firm Penny Collector at Madam Tussauds.
The other possibility is a location owned machine. For instance Nemo in Amsterdam, Wilhelmina Toren at Vaals and an unmanaged machine in the nature at Holtheme Overijssel.
After the change of a site owner, the logo or the theme of the attraction, the images become "outdated" and a new press roller is installed. A new series of three souvenir pennies is born and the old series will become rare!
At the moment, more about 600 different Dutch pennies are known.

Again a piece of the puzzle to complete the history of Pennypress in the Netherlands. This time about Euroscope, before Euroscope BeNeLux was born.
